1. How did Nicodemus know that Jesus was a teacher from God?

v 2 ... “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

2. What did Jesus say the lifting up of the Son of Man would be like and what would that achieve?

 v 14 and 15 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

3. Why did God give his one and only Son?

v 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Summary Points

  • v 1 to 8 Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews, comes to see Jesus at night, and Jesus tells him that he must be born of water and spirit
  • v 9 to 21 Jesus tells Nicodemus that those who believe in him will have eternal life. He is the light of the world
  • v 22 to 26 Jesus and his disciples come to Judea and he baptises there. John is also baptising, but further north at Enon (Aenon). John's disciples express concern that Jesus is baptising and has a lot of people coming to him
