Why did Jesus die?

Jesus predicts that he will die :

Matthew 16 verse 21

21 From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
 

Matthew 20 verses 17 - 18

17 As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death, 

Jesus Christ died so that our sins can be forgiven:

Romans 5 verse 8

8 But God commends his own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
 

1 Corinthians 15 verse 3

3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

1 Peter 3 verse 18

18 Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit,

Christ’s death was the ultimate act of love:

Ephesians 5 verse 2

2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.
 

1 John 3 verse 16

16 By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
